Günther Schumacher
Günther Schumacher (born June 27, 1949 in Rostock ) is a former cyclist from the Federal Republic of Germany who was twice Olympic champion.
Life
The track cyclist won the gold medal against the GDR team at the 1972 Olympic Games with a four- wheel scull made up of Jürgen Colombo , Günter Haritz , Udo Hempel and Schumacher. In the next few years, the German four-wheeler won the world championship three times in a row. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, the German four-man was able to repeat the Olympic victory of 1972 this time against the Soviet four. The four-man raced in 1976 in the line-up of Gregor Braun , Hans Lutz , Schumacher and Peter Vonhof .
As a track driver, Schumacher not only competed in the pursuit, but also in the 1000-meter time trial . His job in the four-wheeler was the role of the starter, who takes over the acceleration to the constant speed at the beginning of the 4000-meter-distance. He was the first driver to win gold twice at the Olympic Games with a four-wheel scull. Schumacher drove for VfR Büttgen .
In October 1977 Schumacher turned professional and essentially drove six days and criteria . Three times he finished a six-day race in second place. As a professional, he won medals at German championships, but he never managed to win the title. In 1981 he worked for the Kotter's Racing Team in road racing .
Günther Schumacher is married and has a daughter. He is a qualified trainer (diploma in 1976 at the Cologne Trainer Academy with a thesis under Arnd Krüger ) and has been running a bicycle shop in Kaarst -Büttgen-Vorst since 1985. He also worked as a sporting director at cycling events. He should not be confused with the German cyclist Günter Schumacher (* 1964) from Langenhagen .
