Nino Borsari (born December 14, 1911 in Cavezzo , † March 31, 1996 in Carlton ) was an Italian cyclist and Olympic champion.
Athletic career
Nino Borsari came from a very poor background and was an orphan. He worked for a wealthy pharmacist who recognized his talent and bought him a racing bike together with another sponsor. At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he won the gold medal in the team pursuit together with Marco Cimatti , Paolo Pedretti and Alberto Ghilardi . In 1934 he finished second at Milan-Modena , and in 1935 he won the Circuito Emiliano-Lombardo .
Borsari celebrated successes of a different kind at the six days in New York's Madison Square Garden . Although he never took a leading place, he was popular as a "showman" with a lot of charisma with organizers and the audience. In 1934 he started in Australia for the first time , won the Victorian Centenary Cycling Tour over 1700 miles and soon became very popular there too.
An Italian in Australia
When Italy entered World War II in 1940, Borsari was in Australia. Having stayed in Australia as a guest of the Australian Cycling Federation , he was spared internment and stayed there after the war ended. In 1940 he married the opera singer Fanny Borsari, née Cester (1921–1988). She was the aunt of Alf , Jayney and Johnny Klimek . He opened two shops in the Carlton district of Melbourne , where many Italians lived even then. One of them, Borsaris Emporium , which sells household and goods from Italy, existed for 50 years and became the meeting point of the Italian quarter. Today the business is no longer family-owned, there is “Borsari's Ristorante”. A second shop, for bicycles, still exists today.
In Carlton, Nino Borsari was involved on various levels for the Italian community there. He promoted cycling in Australia, brought Italian riders there and was one of the co-founders and patrons of the Juventus Soccer Club . His willingness to help with the integration of Italians in Australia made him something of an unofficial mayor and King of Carlton . When Melbourne competed for the 1956 Olympics , Borsari traveled with the Australian delegation to London to exert his influence. The vote went in favor of Melbourne, one vote ahead of Buenos Aires , which was also attributed to Borsari's commitment. He also managed cyclists, boxers, car racers, artists and singers who came to Australia from Italy. In 1967 he was the founding president of the Australian Boxing Federation .
Nino Borsari cycled until he was 67 years old; In 1978 he was found unconscious on the street after an accident and was in a coma for two weeks . It took him years to recover from it. He died of cancer at the age of 84. With the “Borsari Collection” he left behind important material for historical research on Italian immigration to Australia.
family
In 1940 Nino Borsari married Fanny Cester, who had emigrated from Italy to Australia in 1937; the couple had two children. Fanny Borsari was also involved in society. For example, she became the first female president of a football club, the Geelong Soccer Club , in the 1950s , and she was president of the Royal Children's Hospital Italian Auxiliary .
