Gunnar Henry Asmussen (born May 10, 1944 in Aarhus ) is a former Danish cyclist .

In 1968 Gunnar Asmussen won the gold medal in the team pursuit at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , together with Per Lyngemark , Reno Olsen , Peder Pedersen and Mogens Frey . In the final, the Danish four-man won against the West German team, as the German four-man, while in the lead, had been disqualified in the last round due to "unauthorized pushing".

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Asmussen started in the same discipline, this time with Svend Erik Bjerg , Reno Olsen and Bent Pedersen . With a 13th place in the qualification they missed the leap into the quarterfinals.

Asmussen won six national titles on the track in his career. In 1969, 1970, 1971, 1974 and 1976 he was Danish champion in the team pursuit and in 1970 in the individual pursuit . In the team pursuit titles he drove in 1969, 1970, 1971 together with Niels Fredborg , Gunnar Jonsson and Poul Nielsen , 1974 with Niels Fredborg, Jørn Lund and Jan F. Petersen and 1976 with Niels Fredborg, Gert Frank and Kurt Frisch . He won these titles as a member of the Aarhus BK Association.

Asmussen also drove street races in addition to the railway. As a road driver, he won three national titles. In 1964 and 1965 he was Danish team time trial champion (1964 together with Ole Højlund , Erik Skelde , Thorvald Knudsen and in 1965 together with Ole Højlund, Thorkild Berg and Per Frandsen ) and in 1971 he won the individual time trial title . In addition, Asmussen was twice Nordic champion - in 1970 in the team time trial with Jørgen Schmidt , Jørgen Emil Hansen and Verner Blaudzun and in 1971 in the individual race.

From 2001 Gunnar Asmussen was Technical Director at Team CSC-Tiscali .
