Niels Fredborg
Niels Christian Fredborg (born January 28, 1946 in Odder ) is a former Danish racing cyclist who was successful as a track cyclist . He won three medals in three Olympics and was multiple world champion.
Niels Fredborg was the dominant amateur track cyclist in Denmark, especially in the short-term disciplines from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. He won 27 national titles in the disciplines of team pursuit , sprint , 1000-meter time trial and tandem race . In 1967 Fredborg became world champion for the first time in his special discipline, the 1000-meter time trial. He defended his title at the UCI track world championships in 1968 , where he was also runner-up in the track sprint behind Daniel Morelon . At the 1968 Olympic Games he was defeated by the French Pierre Trentin, who was seven tenths of a second faster, in the 1000-meter time trial with a time of 1: 04.61 min . In 1970 Fredborg was again world champion in the 1000 m and runner-up in the track sprint, again behind Morelon. At the 1972 Olympic Games , Fredborg won the gold medal in the 1000-meter time trial with a time of 1: 06.44 minutes ahead of the Australian Danny Clark , who later became a specialist in six-day races . In 1976 in Montreal , Fredborg did not succeed in repeating his Olympic victory; behind Klaus-Jürgen Grünke and Michel Vaarten , he only achieved the bronze medal.
Fredborg became a professional cyclist after the 1976 Olympics . In 1980 he was third at the first professional World Cup in Keirin . He ended his career after a serious fall. In 1993 he became a member of the Hall of Fame of Danish Sports .
Fredborg lost part of his hearing in a fall on the Ordrup cycle track in 1965.
