Klaus-Jürgen Grünke

Klaus-Jürgen Grünke (born March 30, 1951 in Bad Lauchstädt ) is a former German racing cyclist who was successful as a track cyclist in the GDR.

Athletic career

Klaus Grünke started cycling at BSG Buna Schkopau in 1967 at the age of 14. He was u. a. trained by former racing driver Johannes Schober .

Grünke, who started for the Berlin TSC , was champion of the German Democratic Republic in the 1000 m time trial in 1970, 1971 and 1974 , in 1972 and 1973 in tandem and in 1971 and 1974 in the 4000 m team pursuit. In 1974 he was one of the GDR foursome, who lost to the West German gold foursome in the final of the track cycling world championships , at the world championships the following year he and his team won the bronze medal in the team pursuit and became world champion in the 1000 m time trial. At the 1976 Summer Olympics , Grünke won the gold medal in the 1000 m time trial with a time of 1: 05.92 minutes ahead of the Belgian Michel Vaarten and the Dane Niels Fredborg . Grünke ended his career in 1979. In 2004 he won the title in his age group at the Senior World Championships in St. Johann in Austria.

Honors

For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Professional

Grünke completed an apprenticeship as a steel construction fitter. Later worked as a bus driver in Berlin.

Private

Grünke has two brothers who were also active as cyclists, Dieter and Peter Grünke .
