Werner Malitz (born September 22, 1926 in Berlin ; † May 28, 2017 there ) was a German racing cyclist .

biography

After returning from French captivity , Werner Malitz (nickname "Hugo") started his racing career in 1951, which was interrupted by the Second World War (in 1943 he was second in the German sprinter youth championship behind Lul Gillen from Luxembourg, who later became very popular ) at the BSG Einheit Berliner Bear up again. In 1953 Werner Malitz was two-time GDR champion , in the sprint and in the 1000-meter time trial , in the team pursuit he took place with the team ( Fritz Jahresling , Ronny Maraun and Heinz Wahl ) of the BSG unit Berlin Bear (later Berlin TSC ) three. In 1954 he won the Berlin – Cottbus – Berlin road race . In 1955, he and Wahl were GDR champions in tandem races . In 1957 he won the Tour of Egypt . In 1958 he was once again GDR champion in two-man team driving with Siegfried Köhler and finished third in the single pursuit .

After his active career, Malitz worked from 1959 to 1990 as a trainer at SC Einheit Berlin and head coach of the Berlin TSC cycling section. From 1969 he was also the discipline trainer of the German Cycling Association of the GDR for tandem and sprint. At the age of 63, he took early retirement in 1990, but remained with the athletes of the Berlin KED Bianchi team as a supervisor and helper.

Werner Malitz died in May 2017 at the age of 90 in a Berlin nursing home.
