The medal "Badge of Honor for Physical Culture and Sport of the German Democratic Republic" was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on July 23, 1969, initially in one step. They were awarded for outstanding merits and many years of successful work in the development of physical culture and sports in the GDR, in particular for services to perfecting the planning, management and organization of both areas, which contributed to the promotion of the international reputation of sport in the GDR. A maximum of 40 medals were awarded annually; in collectives of no more than five members, each member received a medal.

Appearance and wearing style

The designation medal is a little confusing for this honorary badge, as the shape of a 41 mm wide curved laurel branch was modeled, which runs from right to left from the viewer. In the center is the 12.5 mm diameter state coat of arms of the GDR consisting of a black ring with a hammer and compass on a red background (in enamel), then painted from 1972. The reverse of the medal is smooth. The medal was worn on a pentagonal pentagonal 24 mm wide blue covered clasp with two vertical 4 mm wide silver-white central stripes that were woven in 2 mm from the hem. The interim clasp is of the same quality, but 33 × 13 mm in size. However, the vertical white stripes are 6 mm wide and 4 mm from the hem. In addition, the interim clasp shows the 28 mm large miniature of the medal. Initially, the medal was worn on the right and from 1978 on the left upper side of the chest.
