Klaus Lewandowski
Klaus Lewandowski (born July 20, 1940 in Berlin ) is a former German cyclist and national cycling champion who was mainly active as a track cyclist .
Athletic career
Lewandowski did not learn to cycle until he was 16 years old. After he was initially active in swimming and soccer , he came to cycling in 1956. He was called "Emil" among fellow racing drivers. He became a member of SG Dynamo Berlin and later switched to the sports club Dynamo Berlin . His coach there was Herbert Gröning, who also led him to his first championship titles in the youth ( sprint and team pursuit ). After the transition to the men's class, he was already GDR champion in the 1000-meter time trial and third in the sprint in the first year . Shortly afterwards, his coach was fired (probably for political reasons). Lewandowski, who had a close personal relationship with Gröning, was so shocked and outraged that he spontaneously went to West Berlin to become a professional driver. There he received a contract for the Berolina racing team ( Dieter Puschel and Sigi Renz were also under contract there), which was managed by Hans Preiskeit . At that time, Preiskeit was also the sports director of the Berlin six-day race in the Deutschlandhalle . In this race Lewandowski started twice, but without being able to place in the front field.
Professional
After finishing his career he opened a bicycle shop (LEWA's Fahrradhaus) in Buchholz in Lower Saxony .
