Helmut Richard Körnig (born September 19, 1927 in Engelsdorf (Leipzig) , † February 12, 1991 in Berlin ) was a German racing cyclist .

Athletic career

Helmut Körnig comes from a family of cyclists. His father, Willy Körnig, was the road foreman of Saxony by the end of the 1920s and supported his son's ambitions. In 1946, with the help of his father, he had assembled a racing bike and began to train with it regularly. On the occasion of the Leipzig spring fair in 1948, the Stötteritz triangular race was held, it was Körnig's first competition. Three weeks later he made his debut on the track in Probstheida . After a few weeks of track training, he became Leipzig sprint champion . In 1950 he joined the BSG Stahl Südwest Leipzigon. Here he developed into a top driver on the railway in the GDR in the early 1950s. Grain was two-fold in 1950 East German champion in track cycling . He won the title in the 1000 meter time trial and, together with Otto Busse , Rolf Thieme and Gerd Thiemichen, the title in the 4000 meter team pursuit . He also won the silver medal in the sprint in 1949 and, together with Hans Zimoch, the bronze medal in the tandem race in 1952 .
