Bernd Barleben (born January 1, 1940 in Berlin ) is a former cyclist from the GDR . In 1960 he won an Olympic silver medal in the team pursuit .

Sports career

In 1960, Bernd Barleben from SC Einheit Berlin ousted Rolf Nitzsche from the GDR foursome and qualified together with Peter Gröning , Manfred Klieme and Siegfried Köhler in the domestic German duel for the all-German team . At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 , the four Berliners reached the final and only lost to the Italian foursome there.

In 1961 and 1962 Barleben, Klieme, Köhler and Wolfgang Schmelzer won together at the GDR championships in the team pursuit . Köhler and Schmelzer also won the two-man team race ahead of Barleben and Klieme in 1961, and Barleben and Klieme won in 1962. In 1963, the SC unit Berlin went on in the TSC Berlin . Barleben, Köhler and Schmelzer won the championship title in the team pursuit together with Jürgen Kißner in 1963 and 1964 .

Barleben was also successful as a road driver in 1959. He started in 1960 with the GDR national team in the Tour of Tunisia , finished 8th in the classic Rund um Berlin bike and was able to secure victory at Berlin-Cottbus-Berlin . In 1961 he won again at Berlin-Lübben-Berlin and Berlin-Bad Freienwalde-Berlin. In 1962 he was called up again in the GDR national team, where he was able to finish fifth in the overall ranking on the Tour of Egypt.

Professional

After his active cycling career, Barleben completed a degree in journalism and then worked for Deutsche Sportecho . After initially supervising the BSG Post Berlin as a trainer, he became a full-time trainer at TSC Berlin and finally the driver's supervisor for the Peace Tour and the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . Thomas Huschke , Michael Milde and Karl-Heinz Oberfranz were among his protégés . When one of his athletes was convicted of doping , he was dismissed by the DRSV. He then worked as a taxi driver, as a restaurateur and finally for an auto supplier in Brieselang .
