Dieter Stein (born June 21, 1955 in Berlin ) is a former German cyclist and later coach and sporting director of the Berlin six-day race .

Athletic career

Stein began his cycling career at BSG Empor Berlin . He won a title at the races of the Children's and Youth Partakiade in 1972. Dieter Stein was active as a track cyclist in the GDR from 1969 to 1985 , he rode for the Berlin TSC . During this time he was GDR champion five times, in the points race (1984), in the team pursuit (1976 and 1977) and in the two-man team race (1980 with Volker Winkler and 1981 with Frank Kühn ). Dieter Stein was also GDR champion three times on the winter track in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle , won the amateur six-day race three times, the “1001 Round” race four times and the Berlin International Championship in two-man team driving three times. In 1985 he ended his career.

Professional

Dieter Stein originally trained as an electrical engineer. In later years Dieter Stein, who had meanwhile trained as a sports teacher, was from 1985 coach of the Berlin KED-Bianchi Team , the U-23 team of the Berlin Cycling Association. Amongst Stein's protégés were drivers like Erik Zabel , Jens Voigt , Andreas Klöden and Jan Schaffrath . In 2009, he succeeded Otto Ziege as the sporting director of the Berlin six-day race. In 2015, Stein had a serious accident in a training accident on Mallorca .
