Ronny Maraun
Ronald "Ronny" Maraun (born September 10, 1928 in Berlin , † July 19, 2017 in Berlin) is a former German racing cyclist .
Athletic career
From 1948 Maraun belonged to the Berlin-Mitte district team under the direction of Paul Szostak. The team switched to the western part of Berlin and joined the club RC Endspurt 1911. In 1951 he moved to the BSG unit Berlin Bear .
In 1950 Ronny Maraun took second place in the Berlin – Cottbus – Berlin road race . In 1951 and 1952 he was East German champion in the standing race . In 1953 he and his team from BSG Einheit Berliner Bär (with Fritz Yearling , Werner Malitz , Heinz Wahl ) took third place in the team pursuit at the GDR championships in track cycling . With SC Einheit Berlin since 1954 (the successor to Einheit Berliner Bär), he became East German champion in two-man team driving in 1955 together with Fritz Yearling . In the course of his career, Maraun developed into one of the best train drivers in the GDR. He became a sought-after partner for two-team races among his colleagues . With Heinz Wahl and Hans Wagner he won the 1001 rounds in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in Berlin in 1956 and 1957. He was also always right at the front of the matadors' hour, which is particularly popular with the spectators . At the beginning of the 1950s, the GDR's sports management tried to sideline the still existing professional driver sport (which particularly attracted crowds of spectators in standing races). Among other things, GDR amateurs were encouraged to take part in standing races. This is how Maraun got into standing sport. In addition to the championship title, he won many other races behind engines on summer tracks and on the Berlin winter track. After the end of the season in 1958, he ended his career with a record of more than 200 wins.
Professional
After the end of his sporting career, the trained businessman worked from 1958 as a sales point manager for cycling at the HO-Sport-Zentrum Berlin on Strausberger Platz .
Maraun went to Karl-Marx-Stadt ( Chemnitz ) in 1961 for private reasons . In 2008 he moved back to his home region and lived in Stolzenhagen near Wandlitz .
