Carl Riedel (cyclist)

Carl Riedel (* 21st April 1936 in Leipzig ) is a former German cyclist and DDR -Master in cycling .

Athletic career

Carl Riedel initially competed primarily in road races . So he took part in the GDR tour in 1956 and finished in 69th place. In 1967, Riedel won the GDR championship for standing behind pacemaker Hermann Kretsch . Back then he started for SC Leipzig. Internationally, he stood out by winning the International Standing Championship in Brno in 1965. A little later, he ended his career as a train driver and moved to the pacemaker camp . He won another GDR championship title, this time as a pacemaker, with Roland Hempel in 1985. Both of them started for the association BSG Aufbau Centrum Leipzig . A year later both were able to defend the title. This succeeded again in 1987.

Riedel won the bronze medal at the championships with Erhard Hancke on the roll in 1970. He repeated this in 1974 (starting for the SC DHfK Leipzig) with Roland Barts from Berlin, 1977 with the multiple GDR champion Karl Kaminski , 1978 with Michael Schiffner , 1981 and 1984 again with Roland Hempel.

In 1982 and 1983 he led Roland Hempel to the silver medal. At the last GDR championship in 1990, he also took second place with Holger Ehnert . Riedel remained active as a pacemaker for many years. In the 1985 season he was the most successful pacemaker in the GDR with nine wins.
