Ronald Hempel

Ronald Hempel (* 15. November 1955 in Leipzig ) is a former German cyclist and DDR -Master in cycling .

Athletic career

Hempel competed in road and rail races , but was more successful as a rail driver. He mainly competed in standing races on the track and was East German champion in this discipline in 1985 (starting for the Aufbau Centrum Leipzig club) and 1986 and 1987 (for TSG Gröditz), both under the leadership of pacemaker Carl Riedel . He won the silver medal at the championships in 1982 and 1983. He won bronze in 1980 and 1984, as well as at the last GDR championship in 1990. In his championship years he was also the dominant stayer in the GDR; in 1985 he won six races and seven second places.

In 1977 he won the annual ranking for the best road drivers of the company sports associations (BSG). As a road driver, he took part in the GDR tour for the BSG team in 1987 and was 87th in the overall ranking.

Hempel is the head of the cycling department at SC DHfK Leipzig (as of 2019).
