Wolfgang Schmelzer
Wolfgang Schmelzer (born June 13, 1940 in Berlin ) is a former cyclist from the GDR .
Athletic career
Wolfgang Schmelzer, who initially rode for SC Einheit Berlin , from 1963 for TSC Berlin and from 1970 for Post Berlin , was one of the most successful track cyclists in the GDR in the 1960s and early 1970s. He won 15 GDR championship titles in various disciplines, in the team pursuit , the two-man team driving and in the standing race . In 1968 he started in the team pursuit at the Olympic Games in Mexico City , together with Heinz Richter , Rudolf Franz and Manfred Ulbricht , but without taking a leading position.
Schmelzer, called "Pingo" by friends, won the title of "International Master of the ČSSR" behind his pacemaker Heinz Stöber on September 13, 1970 in Brno - as in the previous year . He won the international standing championship in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in Berlin from 1970 to 1973.
Professional
After his sporting career, he worked as a BZA photographer and later as a freelance sports photographer.
Awards
On December 16, 1961 he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Master of Sport .
