Herbert Richter (cyclist)

Herbert Richter (born April 26, 1947 in Chemnitz ) is a former cyclist from the GDR . In 1972 he won an Olympic silver medal in the team pursuit .

Athletic career

Richter began cycling at SC Karl-Marx-Stadt at the age of 17, and in 1965 he won the GDR youth championship in the team pursuit . At the UCI World Championship in 1970, Thomas Huschke , Heinz Richter , Herbert Richter and Manfred Ulbricht reached the final in the team pursuit, after the victory of the West German four-man, Richter received his first international medal with silver. A year later, the four from Italy and the GDR faced each other in the final; Huschke, Herbert Richter, Heinz Richter and Uwe Unterwalder again took second place. The GDR foursome won the third silver medal at the annual highlight in a row in the same line-up as in 1971 at the Olympic Games in Munich behind the foursome from the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1973 Herbert Richter won the GDR championship in two-man team driving together with Manfred Ulbricht and together with Andreas Neuer and Matthias Wiegand both won the team pursuit. At the 1974 World Cup, Huschke, Unterwalder and Herbert Richter reached the final again together with Klaus-Jürgen Grünke and were once again defeated by the four from the Federal Republic.

Professional

Herbert Richter is a trained mechanical engineer. He worked in the construction industry before and after the fall of the Wall .

Honors

In 1972 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze for his sporting achievements .
