Andreas Neuer (born March 24, 1953 in Zwickau ) is a former German cyclist and GDR cycling champion.

Athletic career

Neuer began cycling in 1968 (after having previously played football and gymnastics ) at BSG Lok Zwickau , and in 1970 he was delegated to SC Karl-Marx-Stadt . Originally, he wasn't supposed to switch to the sports club, which wanted to bring Matthias Wiegand, a talent from Zwickau, to Karl-Marx-Stadt. The trainers from Zwickau only wanted to give up Wiegand if Neuer also had a chance at the sports club, and in the end both drivers changed. In 1973, Neuer became the GDR champion in team pursuit . In 1972 he was second in the championship with his club. This was also his first start in the men's class. In 1975 he was runner-up in the two-man team driving with his club mate Matthias Wiegand . In 1977, Neuer was also successful with Volker Winkler in the six-day race on the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle track in Berlin . Neuer was nominated for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal in the four-wheeler, but was not used as a substitute driver.

Neuer was also a very good road driver. He won the 1980 GDR championship in the road team time trial with Joachim Vogel, Peter Scheibner and Holger Müller. He also won the Thuringia Tour in 1976 and Berlin-Angermünde-Berlin in 1979 . In the 1975 GDR tour he was fifth, 12th in 1977 and 20th in the overall ranking in 1980. In 1978 he came third in the GDR's criterion championship. In 1979 he was able to win four qualifying races for the Peace Drive, which earned him a starting place in the team. He started in the International Peace Tour in 1978 (15th place) and 1979 (51st place). In 1978 he joined the team at short notice after Bernd Drogan was unable to start due to an injury. In 1980 he won the renowned Hungarian cycling race Grand Prix Cycliste de Gemenc . In 1981 he ended his career.
In 2007, Neuer took over the presidency of the Friends' Association of the Main-Franken-Tour (formerly Ernst Sachs Memorial Race).
