Tour de Tunisie
The Tour de Tunisie is a Tunisian stage race . In 2004 it was part of the UCI Africa Tour (class 2.5), which was also the last race for the time being. In 2016 a bike race was held again.
history
In 1953 a Tunisian bicycle club organized the first edition of this race in collaboration with a Tunisian newspaper. 73 racing cyclists, including 11 Tunisians, started the race. The Tunisian Béchir Mardassi won the race. Because of the large participation, further races were started in 1954 and 1955.
The next edition did not take place until 1959; this time the organization was taken over by the Tunisian newspaper Le Sport and - with an interruption in 1963 - carried out annually until 1964. These five trips were arguably the most important time of the race. International stars such as Walter Godefroot , Gösta Pettersson and Lucien Aimar were participants.
In 1978 the tour started again. This time the Tunisian Cycling Federation organized the ride in collaboration with a Tunisian newspaper. Until 1997 the race was held annually, with one exception, 1984. 1983–1988 the race was won by Germans and Poles. A subsequent Tunisian winning streak was interrupted in 1994, again by a German. In 1997, Patrick Moster became the last German driver to win.
The race was held annually from 2000 to 2004 and then paused until 2016.
