Karl-Heinz Oberfranz (born December 23, 1951 in Bad Doberan ) is a former cyclist from the GDR who was mainly active as a road cyclist.

Athletic career

1968 Upper Franz began in BSG Lok Bad Doberan with the cycling . In 1969 he moved to TSC Berlin and was trained there by Bernd Barleben . He was able to win the GDR youth championship in road racing in 1969 and also won the international junior rally , which was held for the first time in autumn 1970 and was organized by the GDR cycling association until 1989. In the GDR tours in 1971 and 1972 (a stage win) he won the ranking for the best young driver. His best placement on this tour was 13th in 1973. In 1972 he started the International Peace Tour, won the 5th stage from Erfurt to Gera and was 12th in the final ranking. This stage victory was watched closely by Olaf Ludwig on the roadside, who then decided to become a cyclist straight away and later repeatedly acknowledged this impetus as the beginning of his career. In 1971 Karl-Heinz Oberfranz reached third place with TSC Berlin in the GDR championship in the team time trial . Karl-Heinz Oberfranz started the road race at the Summer Olympics in Munich in 1972 and finished in 30th place. In the spring of 1973, he ended his career very early under circumstances that are still unknown to this day, after he had still contested the winter rail season in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in Berlin and had also been assigned to the GDR road driver class for the 1973 season.

Professional

Karl-Heinz Oberfranz completed an apprenticeship as a fitter.
