Jürgen Geschke
Hans-Jürgen Geschke (born July 7, 1943 in Berlin ) is a former German racing cyclist .
Biographical
Hans-Jürgen "Tutti" Geschke - the nickname he received because of his Italian origins on his father's side - was sprint world champion and, together with Werner Otto, two-time amateur world champion in tandem driving in the 1960s and 1970s for the GDR . His trainer at TSC Berlin was Werner Malitz , a former track cyclist and multiple GDR champion.
His son Simon is also a cyclist and runs it professionally (as of 2020).
Geschke began his sporting career as a boxer at BSG Motor Ost, at the age of 17 he switched to cycling .
Sporting successes
In the years 1964, 1966 to 1971 and 1973-1975 Geschke was a total of ten times national GDR sprint champion . In 1968 he took part in the Olympic Games without success , then he was then three times 1968–1971 GDR champion in tandem driving with Werner Otto. Then came the international breakthrough. Geschke was 1969 and 1971 world champion and 1970 runner-up in tandem driving. In 1972 he won the silver medal in tandem at the Olympic Games in Munich and in 1976 the bronze medal in the sprint at the Olympic Games in Montreal . In 1977 he became world champion in the sprint on the oval in San Cristobal , capital of the state of Táchira, Venezuela.
In 1969, 1972 and 1977 he won the GDR Grand Prix in the sprint. Geschke was one of the public favorites on the track in Berlin's Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle . There he won the International Sprint Championship in Berlin five times between 1964 and 1976 .
Professional and personal matters after competitive sport
After his active career, he began working as a trainer at TSC Berlin . In 1982 Geschke bought a piece of land for himself and his family in Wandlitz , on which a home was ready to move into in 1988. After the fall of the Wall he bought a now vacant vegetable shop from Konsum and opened THE bicycle shop here in 1994, “With a bike and a hand from the world champion”. In 1996, he founded the mountain bike club RSC Wandlitz in the village and acted as a volunteer trainer to promote the next generation of cyclists. Over the years, the young people's enthusiasm for cycling declined, so that in 2010 the club only had around 15 cycling enthusiasts who used cycling as a recreational sport.
Geschke himself participates (e) in some popular sport bicycle races such as the Erzgebirgs-Bike-Marathon in Seiffen or the 9th open Uckermärkischen championship in Schönow 2010.
Geschke has since given up his bicycle business for reasons of age. However, he is involved in the community in matters of cycling and has, for example, actively participated in the provision and repair of donated bicycles for the asylum seekers home in the district.
