He began with the sport at the age of 13, first with athletics , then switched to cycling at the age of 17 . Tkáč was third in the track cycling world championships in the 1000 meter time trial in 1970 and world champion in track sprint in 1974 . At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal , he beat the 1968 and 1972 Olympic champion of 1968 and 1972, the French Daniel Morelon , and won the gold medal in the final of the track sprint tournament . In 1977 he won the prestigious Grand Prix Framar in the Czech Republic. In 1978 Tkáč was again world champion in the track sprint, in the final he won against Emmanuel Raasch from the GDR . In his third Olympic participation in Moscow in 1980 and 1976 , he finished fourth in the sprint. During his career, Tkáč started for Slovan Bratislava and Dukla Trenčín .

Today Tkac is a functionary in the Slovak cycling association. He originally trained as a machine technician.
Honors
In 1974, 1976 and 1978 Anton Tkac was the winner of the annual survey of the Král cyklistiky ( cycling king ) of the cycling association Československý svaz cyklistiky. Tkáč was athlete of the year in Czechoslovakia in 1976 and 1978.
