history

The Meienberg office with the town of the same name as its center belonged to the early Habsburg ownership. In the Habsburg land register of 1309 it is described almost in the later federal scope, although Dierikon , Root and Mettenwil near Ballwil are also included. In the Sempach War of 1386 between the Confederates and Habsburgs, the office was a theater of war and the Confederates destroyed the town. Lucerne took possession of it as part of the conquest of today's Canton of Aargau by the Confederates in 1415 . In 1425, however, Lucerne had to return the office to the common property of the confederates in the free offices. It then formed one of the 13 offices of the common rulership , which were alternately administered by the places of the Confederation for two years.

During the Reformation in 1529, the office of Meienberg remained Catholic and was allowed to keep its old rights (in particular the election of the subordinate) and its official banner after the decision of the Catholic places victorious in the Second Kappel War . In 1533 the right to choose the banner master was also granted. The official banner of Meienberg shows a green linden tree on a white background on a green three-mountain.

In office, the lower court rulership rights, which are important for the population, were not exercised in the entire area by the federal bailiff . At the end of the old Confederation in 1798, the city of Zug owned the lower court in Oberrüti , the city of Lucerne that in Dietwil and that of the Rüssegg rule, which included the villages of Reussegg, the church village of Sins and some houses and mats in Auw .

In Helvetic Republic , the Meienberg office was part of the Muri district and merged with the other offices in the canton of Baden . This against the will of the population, who favored a connection to Zug or Lucerne. In 1802 another attempt to join Zug was unsuccessful. In 1803 the municipalities of the former office became part of the canton of Aargau and shared the further fate of the Freiamt.

At the end of the old Confederation in 1798, the Meienberg office was composed as follows (broken down according to the number of inhabitants of the localities):
