William James Bailey (born April 6, 1888 in London , † January 22, 1971 ) was an English cyclist and four-time amateur world champion in sprinting .

William Bailey was the dominant amateur sprinters in the period before the First World War . He was British champion four times and English champion six times and set several national records.

William Bailey was the amateur sprint world champion four times: 1909 , 1910 , 1911 and 1913. He also won the sprint classic “ Grand Prix de Paris ” four times in a row (1910, 1911, 1912 and 1913) and the Grand Prix de l in 1920 'UVF . After the First World War, Bailey tried a comeback as a professional (until 1930) and in 1920 was able to achieve a third place in the sprint at the World Track Championships .

In 1928, Bailey set a world record of 58 seconds over the half mile on the Herne Hill Velodrome . He also trained the British cycling team in preparation for the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam .

William Bailey was a brother of Sydney Bailey , who also started as a cyclist at World Championships and Olympic Games.
