Ryan Neville Bayley OAM (born March 9, 1982 in Perth ) is a former Australian track cyclist and two-time Olympic champion.

Athletic career

Ryan Bayley began competing at the age of 15. Bayley celebrated his first international success in 2001 at the track cycling world championships when he won the title in the Keirin . A year later, he won the sprint and team sprint at the Commonwealth Games . In 2004 at the Olympic Games his two most important successes so far followed with the Olympic victories in Sprint and Keirin. In 2006 at the Commonwealth Games , he won again in the Sprint and Keirin.

Honors

In 2004 Ryan Bayley received the "Hubert Opperman Award" ("Oppy Oscar"), named after the legendary Australian cycling star Hubert Opperman , for the best performance of the year in Australian sport. In 2005 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal. He was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Cycling Australia Hall of Fame in 2016 .

Private

His sister, the former cyclist Kristine Bayley , has been married to Shane Perkins , who is also a successful track cyclist , since 2009 . Perkins and Bayley were so antagonistic that they fought at the velodrome and did not speak for a long time.
