History and organization

The first Erzgebirgs-Bike-Marathon took place in 1993 with more than 200 starters and was the first mountain bike marathon in Germany. This makes the EBM the oldest German mountain bike marathon. The number of participants has increased continuously since 1993. The sponsor and organizer is the specially founded EBM organization , which is financially supported by around 200 companies and businesses. The main sponsors are the online bicycle retailer Bike24 , the Erzgebirgssparkasse and the American sporting goods manufacturer Scott . The sports event is aimed at amateurs and hobby mountain bikers. Since 2009 the EBM has been part of the largest European mountain bike marathon racing series, MarathonMan Europe.

In addition to many German athletes, more and more foreign mountain bikers are now taking part. The competition takes place for all age groups on a 30 km circuit, so that the spectators can see the athletes several times and cheer them on. There is also a 10 km introductory lap through the town. The hilly racetrack is partly rolled smooth and the verge mowed. Former successful cyclists such as world champions Jürgen Geschke and Jan Hruška also regularly take part in the competitions.
