Last updated: September 26, 2016

Edgar Lawrence "Dunc" Gray (born July 17, 1906 in Goulburn , † August 30, 1996 in Kiama ) was an Australian cyclist and the first Australian to win an Olympic gold medal in cycling.

Gray first took part in the Olympic Games in 1928 . In Antwerp he started a 1 km time trial for the first time and won the bronze medal with a time of 1: 15.06 min. Gray was the only cyclist who Australia sent to the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles , where he was registered for both the 1000m time trial and the track sprint . Despite being hospitalized for flu a week before his race, Gray managed to qualify for the sprint semifinals. Gray did not take part in the bronze medal run because he feared he would be too weak for two races in one evening due to the illness, so that the Italian Bruno Pellizzari only had to drive around the track to win the bronze medal. Gray's decision to save his strength for the 1000 m time trial paid off, with the new world record time of 1: 13.0 min. Gray also took part in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , where he was allowed to carry the Australian flag when marching in, as he was the only Olympic champion among the Australian participants. In terms of sport, the games were not successful for him; he was eliminated in the track sprint in the quarterfinals.

The velodrome of Sydney , the Olympic competitions were held at the in 2000, is in his honor Dunc Gray Velodrome . The bike with which he won the gold medal in 1932 is on display.
