Martti Eemil Lappalainen (born April 11, 1902 in Liperi , † October 6, 1941 in Mäntysova , East Karelia ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Lappalainen, who started for the Liperin Kivekkäät and the Pohjos-Kajalan Hiihtoseura, took third place over 30 km at the Lahti Ski Games in 1925. In 1926 Martti Lappalainen was sixth at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in the 30 km cross-country skiing. In 1928 he won the 50 km cross-country skiing at Holmenkollen and was the second non-Norwegian gold medalist in this competition after Anton Collins' success there in 1922. He also took second place over 50 km at the Lahti Ski Games. At the 1928 Winter Olympics , he was seventh and ninth in cross-country skiing in the 18 km race of men over the 50 km distance. In 1929, he won the 30K and 50K runs at the Lahti Ski Games. In the years 1929 to 1931 he was Finnish champion over 10 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1930 , he achieved sixth place over 17 km and fourth place over 50 km.

In March 1931, Lappalainen ran at the Lahti Ski Games in second place over 50 km. In 1932 he was fourth in the 18 km cross-country skiing at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and also took part in the 50 km race, but had to abandon it. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1934 in Sollefteå he won in the 4 x 10 km relay team along with Sulo Nurmela , Klaes Karppinen and Veli Saarinen the gold - and the 18-km run, the bronze medal . In March 1936, he finished third at the Lahti Ski Games over 50 km. He completed his last international race at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1938 , which he finished in 39th place over 50 km. Lappalainen died in the Continuation War in 1941 .

His brother Tauno was also active as a cross-country skier.
