Tord Asle Gjerdalen (born August 3, 1983 in Hønefoss , Viken ) is a Norwegian cross-country skier .

Career

2002 to 2008

Gjerdalen, who starts for Fossum IF, has been competing in international competitions since the end of 2002. At first he started mainly in FIS races , in addition in Continental Cup races, at junior world championships, where he won silver with the Norwegian relay team at the 2003 Junior World Championships in Sollefteå , and Norwegian championships. In February 2004, he was used in a sprint race in Trondheim , where he was 67th, for the first time in the cross-country world cup .

Until the 2005/06 season , Gjerdalen mostly started in lower-class races, only rarely in the World Cup. In Beitostølen he won World Cup points for the first time in 12th place over 15 kilometers. In Lago di Tesero , he came seventh in the 30-kilometer race for the first time in the top ten. With the season Gjerdalen was third there. His best result to date in a single race was fourth in Falun at the end of the season . Shortly before, he was in two races at the 2006 Olympic Games of Turin begun. In the pursuit of Pragelato he finished 17th, over 50 kilometers he was fifteenth.

He finished the overall World Cup 2005/06 in 34th place, in the Distance World Cup he finished 22nd. In the 2006/07 season he was not able to continuously stabilize his performance in the World Cup. But the start of the cross-country skiing world cup 2007/08 in Beitostølen was positive with good placements. He finished the Tour de Ski 2007/2008 in fourth place and narrowly missed the overall podium. He finished eleventh at the national championships in Trondheim on the trails around the Granåsen ski jumping facility. A week later, he reached the Swedish Falun in the 30-km pursuit in second place his first World Cup podium. Also with the relay on the next day he reached second place. At the end of the season in Bormio he was on the podium again. In the end, he finished fourth in the season's overall standings. In the Sprint World Cup he reached 18th place and in the Distance World Cup he came ninth.

Since 2008/2009

At the beginning of the 2008/09 season he started cautiously. In La Clusaz he finished fifth in the mass start over 30 km. During the season he celebrated his first World Cup victory with Tor Arne Hetland , Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Petter Northug . After this victory, however, his performance dropped unexpectedly. He clearly missed out on the points in the Classic World Cup and the sprint in Davos . It was only at the Norwegian Nordic Ski Championships in Gjøvik in January 2009 that he was able to convince again and secured the championship title in the pursuit over 30 km. Two weeks later at the World Cup in Rybinsk he was sixth in the mass start.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec , Gjerdalen reached 14th place in the pursuit. In the 50 km mass start he was 20th. After the world championship, his performance collapsed again. In the World Cup he remained without winning points. He finished the Tour de Ski 2009/2010 in 13th place.

Despite rather disappointing performances, Gjerdalen was part of the squad for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . There he was able to achieve 19th place in the 30 km skiathlon and finished in individual over 15 km on 28th place. After the games, he was able to take 11th place in the individual world cup in Lahti and thus win World Cup points for a long time. In the season he reached second place.

Also at the beginning of the 2010/11 season he started with increasing performances. He finished eighth in La Clusaz and third with the season. After rather mixed performance in consequence of these good finishes, he won the relay at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Norway Oslo the world title in the relay and surprisingly km in the mass start over 50 bronze. In the first World Cup after the World Cup in Lahti, he again won points with a good top 20 placement.

At the Norwegian Nordic Ski Championships 2012 in Voss , he could not finish the individual competition over 15 km and also only reached 27th place in the skiathlon. He was then relegated from the World Cup squad and only started again in the World Cup for the 2012/13 Tour de Ski , which he finished in 21st place. At the Norwegian Championships in Gåsbu in 2013 , he reached fourth place in both skiathlon and individual over 15 km and narrowly missed the podium.

At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Italian di Val Fiemme he started in singles and skiathlon. He was able to win the bronze medal in the individual and reached 12th place in the skiathlon over 30 km. With the Norwegian relay he became world champion. In April 2013 he won the Haukelirennet over 32 km freestyle.

At the Tour de Ski 2013/14 he reached a good sixth place overall. Although he only because the World Cup in following Toblach denied and 57th remained without points profit, he was part of the team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia's Sochi . After finishing 20th in the skiathlon, he finished 21st in the final 50 km individual race. In the 2014/15 season he took part in marathons in the Ski Classics . He won the Marcialonga and took third place at the Jizera Mountains Run and the King Ludwig Run and also achieved third place in the overall standings. The following season he won the Marcialonga and the Toblach-Cortina . He also finished second at La Diagonela and third at the Kaiser-Maximilian-Lauf and at the end of the season came second in the overall ranking of the Ski Classics . After second places in the Scandinavian Cup in Lillehammer over 10 km freestyle and in the 30 km mass start race at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, he won La Sgambeda , Marcialonga and Toblach-Cortina. He also took third place at the Jizera Mountains Run and second place each at the Kaiser Maximilian Run, La Diagonela and Årefjällsloppet , winning the overall ranking of the Ski Classics at the end of the season .

In the following season Gjerdalen triumphed in the Kaiser-Maximilian-Lauf , La Diagonela , Toblach-Cortina and the Reistadløpet . He was also runner - up at the Birkebeinerrennet and at the Ylläs – Levi and, as in the previous year, won the overall ranking of the Ski Classics . In the 2018/19 season he came second in the La Diagonela and third place in the Ski Classics overall standings at the Jizera Mountains . In the following season he took second place at La Diagonela and Marcialonga, second place in the overall ranking of the Ski Classics.
