La Diagonela

La Diagonela is a cross-country long distance race in classic technique, which was launched in 2014. The race starts and finishes in Zuoz in the Upper Engadine , Switzerland .

In 2014 the race marked the start of the Ski Classics competition series and led in two loops over 50 km at an altitude of between 1654 and 1730 m. ü. M. The first edition of the race was originally planned for 2015. But after the Jizera Mountains Run in the Czech Republic had to be canceled in 2014 due to lack of snow, the organizers of Ski Classics asked the La Diagonela Organizing Committee whether the run could be held at short notice as a replacement for the Jizera Mountains Run . The competition was organized in less than 7 days and was initially only intended for professional runners, but was also opened to amateurs.

In the first race on January 12, 2014 Seraina Boner won the women and Rikard Tynell won the men .

For 2015, the run should be organized on January 17th with distances of 65 and 35 km. Due to insufficient snow conditions, the main run had to be shortened to 43 km. The race was held on a 15 km circuit, from which the last three kilometers to the destination Zuoz branched off on the third lap. In the competition, the sure leading Bill Impola missed this turn. It won the men Øystein Pettersen and the women Masako Ishida .

In 2016, the 55 km run was held. Petter Eliassen and Britta Johansson Norgren won this race .

2017 was another winter with little snow, which meant that La Diagonela had to be shortened to 50 km. The winner here Ilya Chernousov and Katerina Smutna . In addition to La Diagonela and La Pachifica, La Cuorta was launched, an 11 km long classic race, which should lead families and cross-country beginners to the classic technique.

In 2018, for the first time in history, the original 65 km route could be contested. The runners drove to St. Moritz and back to Zuoz. This race was won by Tord Asle Gjerdalen and Britta Johansson Norgren .
