Øystein Pettersen starts for Bækkelagets SK . He first competed in FIS and Continental Cup races since 2002 . At the Junior World Championships in 2003 in Sollefteå Petterson was fifth over 10 and sixth over 30 kilometers. With the Norwegian relay he won the silver medal. He was then used in Oslo for the first time in the World Cup and was 45 in a sprint race. Apart from occasional appearances in the World Cup without outstanding results, Pettersen initially continued in lower-class races such as the Continental Cup, North America Cup, Scandinavian Cup and FIS races. For the first time in March 2006 he was able to achieve a place in the top ten in Borlänge as eighth in the sprint. The Norwegian achieved his international breakthrough at the beginning of the 2006/07 season . In Düsseldorf he was second behind Eldar Rønning in the sprint and with him also second in the team sprint on the following day. During the season he always showed good performances, even if he could not show them consistently at a consistently high level.
