Sami Olavi Jauhojärvi (born May 5, 1981 in Ylitornio ) is a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Sami Jauhojärvi lives in Rovaniemi and is part of the Vuokatti Ski Team Kainuu . The student has been competing in international races since the Junior World Championships in Štrbské Pleso in 2000 . He finished seventh over ten and 30 kilometers there, but the following year in Karpacz - Szklarska he won gold over 30 kilometers, silver in the Finnish 4x10 kilometer relay and bronze over ten kilometers. He was also fourth in the sprint. In this discipline, he then also competed at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2001 and finished in 18th place. The first appearances at the end of the season in the cross-country skiing world cup followed . His first result was 57th place in a 10-kilometer race in Borlänge .

In the period that followed, Jauhojärvi kept switching between the World Cup and lower-class events such as FIS and Continental Cup races. In January 2002 he was able to run in a team sprint in Nové Město na Moravě together with Sami Pietilä in sixth place for the first time among the top ten of the World Cup. With the second Finnish season he was in Kuusamo in December 2002 behind the first Finnish season World Cup. In Oberstdorf , Jauhojärvi started in 2005 for the second time in a Nordic World Ski Championships and achieved eleventh place in the pursuit as the best place. In November of that year, the Finn finished fourth in a race over 15 kilometers in Beitostølen for the first time a single-digit place in an individual race in the World Cup. Only in a race over the same distance in December 2007 was he able to achieve a better position with third place.

In 2006 Jauhojärvi started at the Olympic Games in Turin over three routes and achieved the best result with ninth place over 15 kilometers. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo , an eleventh place in the team sprint and a 13th place in the race over 50 kilometers were the best results. He finished the 2006/07 cross-country skiing world cup in ninth place overall.

Jauhojärvi was able to achieve the greatest success of his career so far at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 . Together with Ville Nousiainen , he secured bronze in the team sprint. Two days later he secured the bronze medal in the relay together with Matti Heikkinen , Teemu Kattilakoski and Ville Nousiainen.

At the Finnish Championships in Keuruu in 2010 , he secured the sprint title. A little later he was part of the squad at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . After rank 12 in the sprint, he reached fifth place with the Finnish relay over 4 × 10 km. In the individual over 50 km he finished 20th. Back in the World Cup, he celebrated another top result when he finished tenth in Lahti . In April he won the FIS race from Vadsø .

In the 2010/11 season Jauhojärvi weak start, but caught on December 11 with fifth place in Davos . After he achieved a top 10 placement over 15 km in Drammen in ninth place, he was nominated for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo . After finishing fifth in the individual and in the team sprint, he narrowly missed a medal in fourth in the relay. In the World Cup he did not get any top placements until the end of the season after the World Cup. Also at the Finnish Championships 2011 in Kuopio he remained in the sprint without a medal.

Jauhojärvi also started weakly in the 2011/12 season as 67th in Sjusjøen . Although he was able to achieve results in the World Cup points a little later, top results were not achieved. The Tour de Ski 2011/2012 he finished after weak results at the end stage is ranked 33 overall. It wasn't until Otepää that the Finn finally showed strength again and came in a good tenth place. He was also successful again at the Finnish Championships in 2012 and again secured a title in Keuruu over 3.75 km in classic style. Also in Imatra a little later he won another national gold medal and won the sprint race.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , Jauhojärvi was again without a medal. With the relay, he finished fifth, just behind the medal winners. At the Tour de Ski 2013/2014 he achieved good stage successes, including sixth place in Lenzerheide . In the end, he finished 19th in the overall Tour ranking.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Jauhojärvi started weakly with 33rd place in the skiathlon. The individual race over 15 km went better, in which he finished 17th. After finishing sixth in the relay, Jauhovärvi and Iivo Niskanen secured the Olympic victory in the team sprint. Jauhojärvi came under criticism because he hindered the leading Tim Tscharnke when changing lanes and he fell and thus had no chance of winning. At the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun , he achieved 34th place in the skiathlon, 29th place in the 50 km mass start race and eighth place in the relay. He finished the 2016 Tour de Ski in 36th place. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he finished 32nd in the World Cup mini-tour in Lillehammer . At the beginning of February 2017 he became Finnish champion over 15 km classic in Keuruu . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he and Iivo Niskanen won the bronze medal in the team sprint. He also took eighth place over 15 km classic and fifth place with the relay. At the end of the season he came in 16th place in the World Cup finals in Québec and reached 56th place in the overall World Cup and 38th place in the Distance World Cup.
