Career

Sports

Nousiainen made his international debut at the Junior World Championships in 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest , where he was 49th over the 10 km individual distance. In the sprint, he was eliminated in the preliminary run and finally took 34th place in the ranking. A year later, he launched World Cup juniors in Sweden Sollefteå . The 20-year-old surprised with a seventh place in the mass start over 30 km. In the individual over 10 km in classic style, he finished 18th at the finish.

Two weeks after the Junior World Championships and a 26th place at the Cross-Country Continental Cup in Keuruu , Nousiainen made his debut in the Cross-Country World Cup on March 16, 2003 . In Lahti , however, as 75th, he clearly missed the World Cup points. In the following 2003/04 season , the Finn was only used at his home World Cup in Lahti, but did not finish. In the winter of 2004/05 he started after a good 19th place at the FIS race in Muonio with a weak 76th place at the World Cup opener in Kuusamo . He then moved to the Scandinavian Cup . After a win in Sundsvall and further good placements, he came back to Lahti at the end of the season as part of the World Cup squad. With 38th place, Nousiainen again missed the points, but only just barely. He was then part of the team at the following World Cup in Oslo and was 31st, just one place past the points.

On November 26, 2005, he won his first World Cup points with rank 25 in Kuusamo. In January 2006, Nousiainen started in Lago di Tesero for the first time with the Finnish relay. With his teammates he finished seventh. At the following Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 , he started the individual race over 50 km, but had to end the race early. Until the end of the season he did not start any other races.

In the 2006/07 season Nousiainen started with good results in FIS races in his home country. At his first World Cup starts in Gällivare he also made it into the points. In the Tour de Ski 2006/07 , the Finn finished 23rd in the overall ranking after good stage results. In Davos he crossed the finish line in sixth for the first time in the top ten.

At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 , Nousiainen started in five competitions. In the team sprint, he and Sami Jauhojärvi achieved ninth place. In the pursuit over 30 km, he crossed the finish line in 24th place the following day. In the individual over 15 km in free style he ran even stronger and finished 18th in the end. In the following 4x10 km relay he ran with Sami Jauhojärvi, Juha Lallukka and Teemu Kattilakoski in sixth place. In the final 50 km race, Nousiainen demonstrated his quality once again and crossed the finish line in tenth place. At the end of the season he again ran over 50 km in the top ten in Oslo and came in ninth. A little later, Nousiainen finished the season in 44th place overall.

For the 2007/08 season , Nousiainen finally made it into the top of the world. In Rybinsk in December, he finished second for the first time on a podium. At the following Tour de Ski 2007/08 , he finished 19th overall. The best result was a 12th place over 20 km in Val di Fiemme . In Otepää , the Finn finished third on a World Cup podium for the second time. Also in February in the Liberec team sprint , he ran strong with his partner and only had to admit defeat to the Norwegians. He finished the season in March after another top 10 place in Bormio in 17th place in the overall World Cup standings. In the endurance world cup he finished 10th.

Nousiainen started the new 2008/09 season with a win at the FIS race in Saariselkä . In the first World Cups of the season, however, he was unsuccessful and clearly lagged behind the results of the previous season. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec he started over 15 km, but had to stop the race prematurely. In the pursuit he reached 18th place a little later. In the following team sprint he ran with Sami Jauhojärvi on the bronze rank. In the following season he won the bronze medal together with Matti Heikkinen , Sami Jauhojärvi and Teemu Kattilakoski. In the final mass start over 50 km, Nousiainen ran again in 25th place.

In December 2009, Nousiainen was able to increase his mileage for the first time and finished tenth in the sprint in Rogla . Also in the Tour de Ski 2009/10 he was able to achieve good placings again and was 23rd overall in the end. In January, he won the 19.8 km pursuit title at the Finnish Championships in Keuruu.

At the following 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he was one of the favored members of the Finnish team. After a good 15th place in the individual over 15 km, he had to end the race early in the subsequent pursuit. In the team sprint, he and his partner had to let the competition go and ended up only tenth. He also missed a medal with the relay and was only fifth in the end. In the 50 km final run, Nousiainen reached 37th place. At the end of the season, he reached 14th place in Falun . At the end of March he also secured the Finnish championship title over 50 km in Kontiolahti .

In the following season 2010/11 Nousiainen came again only weak. He broke off the Tour de Ski 2010/11 prematurely and was unable to place in the overall standings. Even at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2011 , after the successes in 2009, this time he did not win a medal. In the 15 km run in classic style, he finished eighth. In the following team sprint, his team finished fifth, with the relay a little later fourth.

Even for the 2011/12 season , Nousiainen did not make it back to the top of the world. In the Tour de Ski 2011/12, he only finished 28th. At the following Finnish championships he won the bronze medal over 15 km. A year later he was able to secure his third title in Jämijärvi and also won the bronze medal in the sprint. Then, despite the lack of success in the World Cup, he was back in the Finnish squad again at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme. In the individual over 15 km, Nousiainen came 26th. With the relay he finished a little later in fifth place.

At the Finnish Championships in Kontiolahti in 2013, he won his fourth national title over 50 km. The Tour de Ski 2013/14 he finished for good individual results in the stages in 13th place overall. He was reassigned to the squad for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and started in the sprint for the first time at his third Olympic Games. He was eliminated in the third run and was 25th in the overall ranking at the end. Over the 15 km individual distance he ran in 28th place. The now 30-year-old was no longer considered for the team competitions.

A few weeks later, he secured the silver medal over 10 km at the Finnish Championships 2014 in Vaajakoski .
