Mona-Liisa Nousiainen , née Mona-Liisa Malvalehto , (born July 20, 1983 in Rovaniemi , † July 29, 2019 in Kouvola ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Sports

Malvalehto won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Karpacz in 2001 with the Finnish 4 × 5 kilometer relay. She finished fourth in the sprint and seventh in the individual race over five kilometers in classic style. She ran her first World Cup race in November 2001 in Kuopio , which she finished classically with 36th place over 10 km. At the Junior World Championships in Schonach in 2002 , she won gold in the sprint and bronze in the 15 km mass start race. Over five kilometers in the free technique, she finished 43rd. In March 2002 she got her first World Cup points in Stockholm with the 14th place in the sprint. At the Junior World Championships in 2003 in Sollefteå , she won gold over 5 km classic and silver with the relay. She finished seventh in the sprint after still winning qualification and ninth in the 15km mass start race. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 in Oberstdorf , she reached seventh place in the sprint. At the end of the 2004/05 season , she achieved fourth place in the Drammen sprint and seventh place in the Lahti sprint for the first time in the top ten in the World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2007 in Sapporo , she finished 12th in the sprint. After placements in midfield, she mainly competed in the Scandinavian Cup from 2009 to 2011 . With the seventh place in December 2011 in Düsseldorf , she achieved a result among the top ten in the World Cup after almost three years. In the 2012/13 season , she won her first World Cup race in Liberec in January 2013 . A month later she won the team sprint in Sochi together with Anne Kyllönen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , she finished seventh in the sprint. At the Finnish cross-country skiing championships in 2013 in Jämijärvi , she won gold in the sprint. She finished the season in 30th place in the overall standings and eighth place in the sprint standings. In the 2013/14 season , ninth place in the sprint and second place in the team sprint were their best results of the season. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, she came in 28th place in the sprint. At the Nordic Opening 2014 in Lillehammer she finished 67th and 2015 in Ruka the 50th place. In February 2015, she took 22nd place in the sprint at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun . In the 2015/16 season she made it into the points three times in the World Cup. Her best placement in the World Cup was 11th in the sprint in Drammen.

Her last competition was at the Finnish Championships 2018 in Taivalvaara on April 6th , 2018 when she finished eleventh in the sprint.

Private

Malvalehto studied accordion at the Sibelius Academy . She was married to Ville Nousiainen . In 2010 they became parents to a daughter.

On July 29, 2019, Nousiainen died of complications from cancer at the age of 36.
