The Jizera Mountains Run ( Jizerská padesátka in Czech ) is a ski marathon with start and finish in Bedřichov and one of sixteen races in the Worldloppet series. The main run runs over 50 km and is carried out using classic technology.

history

The Jizera Mountains Run is said to have originated as a test run to check the performance of the mountaineers from TJ Lokomotiva Liberec at the end of the 1960s, who were preparing for the expeditions into the high mountains.

The first official run was held on January 20, 1968 with 56 runners. The route led across the Jizera Mountains from Bedřichov to Kořenov and back. The first winner was Josef Driml from TJ Lokomotiva Liberec . In the third run in 1970, 194 runners took part. This run achieved notoriety because all the participants in the mountaineering expedition to Huascarán in Peru who took part in the run were killed there four months later under a huge landslide. From the fourth year onwards, the run was carried out as Memorial Expedition Peru 70 . Since then, the popularity has continued to grow, with 7,863 participants taking part in 1977. After the political change in 1989, the number of participants dropped significantly, but has stabilized in recent years at over 4,000 participants. In 1995 the run was included in the Euroloppet series, but is no longer part of the series. The run had to be canceled four times (1988, 1990, 1998 and 2007) due to lack of snow. The ski race was accepted into the organization in 1999 at the annual general assembly of the Worldloppet in Hayward , Wisconsin , (USA). The run has been dominated by the success of Scandinavian athletes since the 2000s. The Jizera Mountains run has repeatedly been part of the cross-country skiing marathon cup and has been part of the Ski Classics racing series since 2011 .

Since 2002, the 50 km circuit has been organized with the same route that leads past Jizerka and the Smědava lodge. The starting height (lowest point) at the ski stadium in Bedřichov is 740 m above sea level , the highest point two kilometers west of the Jizera mountain at over 1000 m above sea level. NN. In addition to the main run, there is also a 30 km run in skating technique and a 25 km run in classic technique.

In 2016 the race was held on a relatively short circuit due to lack of snow. The participants in the main run were divided into several start groups, the start dates of which were spread over the weekend. The runners of the elite group had to run a 3.4 km long lap 15 times, the number 15 standing for the number of expedition participants who died in 1970 and who are to be remembered with the run. All other starters had to run four laps. It was decided that in future the start numbers 1 to 15 will no longer be awarded in memory of the unfortunate climbers.
