Francis Buchholz (born February 19, 1954 in Hanover ) is a German rock bassist .

life and career

Buchholz made his first appearance as a bass guitarist with his school band Blue Carps at his high school at the age of 15. In the following years he played in various rock, blues and jazz bands and graduated from high school. During his mechanical engineering studies at the University of Hanover , he also attended jazz courses at the Hanover University of Music . After being recognized as a conscientious objector , he completed his community service in the social work of the Titus community in Hanover.

In 1973 his band Dawn Road , consisting of Buchholz (bass), Uli Jon Roth (guitar), Jürgen Rosenthal (drums) and Achim Kirschning ( keyboards ), merged with the Scorpions , at that time only consisting of Klaus Meine (vocals) and Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitar). This laid the foundation for the Scorpions' worldwide career. In the same year, the album Fly To The Rainbow was recorded. From 1974 to 1991 Buchholz recorded other albums with the Scorpions: In Trance , Virgin Killer , Taken by Force , Tokyo Tapes , Lovedrive , Animal Magnetism , Blackout , Love At First Sting , World Wide Live , Savage Amusement and Crazy World .

In 1978 he founded the company Rocksound , which supplied the sound technology for major festivals in Germany and for tours of national and international artists in the 1980s and 1990s .

Buchholz enjoyed worldwide success as the bass player for the Scorpions. In total, he has sold over 30 million records with the band and received over 50 gold and platinum awards worldwide, especially in the USA and Canada. He received the German Echo , the German Bravo Otto , the World Music Award and other awards. Michail Gorbatschow received Buchholz and his bandmates from the Scorpions in the Kremlin in Moscow in 1991. In 1992, Buchholz and the Scorpions went their separate ways, for whose Scorpions GmbH he was managing director. He retired into private life and wrote the textbook Bass Magic .

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Buchholz worked as an artist consultant, artist manager and music publisher. He made a comeback on stage in 2005 when he toured Europe and the United States again with Uli Jon Roth, former Dawn Road and Scorpions lead guitarist. In 2008 he produced the album Dream And Deliver together with the band Dreamtide , on which he played the bass.

In 2012, Buchholz went on tour through Europe with former Scorpions lead guitarist Michael Schenker and ex-Scorpions drummer Herman Rarebell , former Rainbow singer Doogie White and keyboardist and guitarist Wayne Findley. There was also a concert at the World's Fair in Yeosu , South Korea. In spring 2013 the second tour began with the same line-up through Europe and South America. The band was now called Michael Schenker's Temple of Rock . In November 2013 a new studio album ( Bridge the Gap ) was released and in 2015 the album Spirit on a Mission . This was followed by tours of the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe in 2015 and 2016. In May 2016 the album Phantom 5 was released by a newly founded band of the same name with Buchholz on bass, which consists of well-known German rock musicians, among others. a. the rock singer Claus Lessmann .

Buchholz is married and has a son and twin daughters.
