Return to Forever -

Return to Forever is the 18th studio album by the German hard rock - band Scorpions .

Emergence

The band had actually announced their resignation in 2010 with a three-year Farewell tour. Since the announced end of the band, the albums Comeblack with new recordings of band classics and cover versions and MTV Unplugged - have been released in Athens . In 2013 the resignation from the resignation was announced.

On the occasion of their 50th anniversary, the band from Hanover released their 18th studio album. Like the previous album Sting in the Tail , the album was produced by the Swedish duo Mikael Nord Anderson and Martin Hansen. It contains 12 in the Standard Edition and 16 in the Deluxe Edition 16 Scorpions-typical, guitar-emphasized hard rock pieces that alternate with rock ballads. The rock number We built this house was released as a single .

Content and music

The following information is excerpts from the track-by-track interview (from DVD 1 Live in Brooklyn of the Tour Edition ) with Rudolf Schenker, Klaus Meine and Matthias Jabs:

Songs from the Standard Edition and Vinyl Edition and editions based on them:

  • Going Out with a Bang is an opening song with atypical Scorpions blues elements, the content of which, according to Klaus Meine, "documents that the band has come back over the decades and has coped with all the setbacks."
  • We Built This House calls guitarist Rudolf Schenker his favorite song on this album. According to Meine, the song is on the one hand to be understood as a love story, but on the other hand it also stands for the band itself has finally "withstood all storms in the fifty years."
  • Rock My Car is a comparatively simple rock song that was written back in the mid-1980s. The song describes accelerating the car on the autobahn and, according to Meine, Schenker and Jabs, is primarily intended to symbolize the fun of driving fast.
  • House of Cards , which is about the emotional change from love to hate, was originally composed by Schenker in 1998 or 1999, while Meine later wrote the text for it. Jabs calls the song his favorite ballad on Return to Forever .
  • All for One describes Meine as “a hymn of praise for friendship” and thus stands for the band, which consists not only of musicians but of “friends”.
  • Rock 'n' Roll Band was created with a different text in the 1980s. The song was originally composed as an "electric version", but celebrated its (live) premiere in 2013 as an acoustic version on MTV Unplugged and, according to Klaus Meine, was "equally well received" by the audience. According to Rudolf Schenker, there was no reason not to release this song as a version recorded in the studio.
  • According to Schenker, Catch Your Luck and Play was created in 1986/1987 when the band was working on Savage Amusement , back then under the title Bite of the Snake . The song was changed a little for this version, and only because of the tonal and musical difference to the rest of the song material did not find its way onto the corresponding album.
  • Rollin 'Home was described by both Rudolf Schenker and Jabs as a rather atypical Scorpions song. Thematically, it goes back to 1972 when the band had a new drummer, Joe Wyman, and the band had an accident with a "hopelessly overloaded moving van" but "got away with it"; the bus "was a total write-off, and the drummer was lost too," said Meine. According to Jabs, the song has a bit like “We will rock you”.
  • Hard Rockin 'the Place dates back to the 1980s as an unreleased song.
  • Eye of the Storm is also an unreleased song from the 1990s and is about "writing postcards after a long tour."
  • The Scratch was the “last song on the record” and, according to Meine, reminds “of the great jazz bands and orchestras”. Jabs called it “the highlight on the album for all guitar lovers”.
  • Gypsy Life is from 1999 and is about gypsy life during a tour.

Bonus tracks:

  • Meine wrote The World We Used to Know in 2014 as a political song that deals with “all the events between the war in Gaza and the confrontation in Ukraine” and promotes a more peaceful future.
  • Dancing with the Moonlight was also presented for the first time in 2013 at the MTV Unplugged Concert and can now be found in a "rock version" on this album. It is about a "dive through the clouds" on the way with Kingdom Come and Alice Cooper to Vladivostok during a festival tour (but the destination was different for the time being ...). And the “aviator danced with the moon,” explained Meine.
  • When the Truth Is a Lie was described by Rudolf Schenker as "rocky and dirty" and compared to older, heavier songs from the past such as Animal Magnetism (1980) and China White (1982).
  • Who We Are is a little acoustic love ballad.

Additional songs:

  • According to Schenker, Delirious was composed in 1984/1985 and somewhat inspired by Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti (1975).
  • One and One Is Three was the last song on the album. "The point is that you can actually do anything if you believe in it - you can move mountains," said Schenker.
  • Crazy Ride processes the Scorpions story, which Schenker and Meine summarize as a "crazy journey".
