Live at Wacken Open Air 2006: A Night to Remember - A Journey Through Time is a live DVD by the German hard rock band Scorpions , which was recorded on August 3, 2006 as part of the Wacken Open Air Festival and ends of the year 2007 in Europe and on February 12, 2008 in the American area.

background

On Thursday, August 3, 2006, the Scorpions performed at the Wacken Open Air as the last band of the day. In advance, 50 songs by the band were put on the Internet, of which the majority of the most popular or most popular songs were put on the setlist of this concert. The band's message was: "You are voting for the songs that you want to hear in Wacken." Around 60,000 visitors saw the concert and it was also broadcast live on the Internet at the same time.

The standout thing about the show is that many former members of the band were on stage as guests and the setlist covered a very wide range of careers. So they played pieces with the former guitarist Uli Jon Roth , such as B. Speedy Coming or We'll Burn the Sky , which the band hadn't performed for a long time. Some well-known songs like Wind of Change (her biggest single success) or Send Me An Angel were missing from the program. Ex-band members Michael Schenker (guitar) and Herman Rarebell (drums) also took part. The latter performed a double drum solo with his successor James Kottak . Also worth mentioning is the fact that Klaus Meine in one of the choruses at Speedy's Coming instead of Alice Cooper and Ringo Starr in the studio version, the two guitarists Matthias Jabs (Scorpions) and Michael Schenker (Ex-Scorpions), as well as the bassist Pawel Maciwoda.

Title selection

The setlist of the concert was put together here by the fans, who had the choice of 50 songs put on the Internet by the band to choose the songs they wanted to hear at the Wacken performance. As Klaus Meine confirmed at the performance, there were a few surprises. Some songs are presented that the band has not performed live for a long time, and an enormous part of the group's career is summarized here. Incidentally, six of the eight songs from the 1979 album Lovedrive made it onto the concert's setlist. It should also be mentioned that the complete Wacken performance is not included on the DVD. In addition to the titles on the DVD, the Scorpions also played the following songs:

  • Dark Lady (between Speedy's Coming and We'll Burn the Sky , with Uli Jon Roth)
  • He's a Woman - She's a Man (between In Trance and In Search of the Peace of Mind , with Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker)
  • In Search of the Peace of Mind (between He's a Woman - She's a Man and Dynamite , with Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker and Tyson Schenker)
  • Dynamite (between In Search of the Peace of Mind and Rock You Like a Hurricane )

Before In Trance , Klaus Meine announces "a few more" songs with "a few surprises", but on the - shortened - DVD only In Trance and the established farewell song Rock You Like a Hurricane follow . This is due to the cutting out of three (in fact quite special) encores. It is not known why the said songs are missing from the DVD release. Regardless of the DVD, when looking at the setlist you can see that a track ( In Search of the Peace of Mind ) from the first Scorpions album Lonesome Crow , released in 1972, was played, but also a track from the current album at the time Unbreakable ( Love 'Em or Leave' Em ). Only the band phase from the beginning of the 90s (since the album Face the Heat , 1993) to the beginning of the new millennium ( Acoustica , 2001) was not taken into account. With a length of over two and a half hours, the concert is one of the longest of the band and it is also the longest concert by the group that has been released on DVD to date.

reception

The website www.metal.de described the performance as a “highlight” of the Wacken Open Air 2006, the musicians had offered a “class performance”. The title A Night to Remember fits “like a fist on the eye” for the “brilliant performance”. The fact that nine points were awarded here instead of the full number of ten was due to "deficiencies in the image guidance". On www.stormbringer.at the picture quality was described as "satisfactory", the sound quality as "perfect". The band's joy in playing was emphasized. However, there were no interviews or backstage reports on the “perfect all-round fan package”. The rating was four out of five. Furthermore, an excerpt from a concert report of the festival from the Rock Hard magazine by author Andreas Himmelstein: “... From the first note you can tell that the band is up for rocking and giving everything. Even after more than 30 years, there is seldom anything to complain about with the Hanoverians in a playful way ... ”. Furthermore, in the same article, the author describes this performance as "one of the best Scorpions gigs of all time" and as a "fantastic action".
