MTV Unplugged - in Athens Return to Forever

MTV Unplugged - in Athens is the second acoustic album and the sixth live album by the German hard rock band Scorpions .

Emergence

Klaus Meine on the MTV Unplugged Tour in Munich, 2014

On September 11 and 12, 2013, the Scorpions performed two acoustic sets in the Lycabettus Theater in Athens as part of the MTV Unplugged series . The open-air theater designed in 1965 by the Greek architect Takis Zenetos (which is as old as the history of the Scorpions) is located at about 300 m above sea level on Mount Lykabettus and offers an impressive view of the Greek metropolis. It was the first MTV unplugged event in the open air.

The Scorpions' almost two and a half hour concert also contains a solo part in the middle, in which the three main band members Jabs, Schenker and Meine each perform their own song solo. While guitarist Matthias introduces an instrumental title, for the first time since the single Hey You , which was released in 1980, Rudolf Schenker can be heard as the lead singer of a Scorpions title. His subsequent announcement of Klaus Meines song Follow Your Heart with the words: “ Applause, applause for Klaus! “Is not just a little rhyme, but due to the unusual duplication of the word applause in the German language, it can also be seen as a reference to the title Applaus, Applaus by the German rock band Sportfreunde Stiller , which was high in the charts at the time of recording .

Title selection

Rudolf Schenker on the MTV Unplugged Tour in Munich, 2014

Since the group had already implemented a similar project with Acoustica 12 years earlier , the band used many older and sometimes never played live pieces from the band's history for this MTV Unplugged instead of mainly the big and popular pieces. The titles already performed in acoustic guise at Acoustica are Send Me an Angel , Rock You Like a Hurricane , Wind of Change and Still Loving You , some of which can be heard here by duet partners in a different form than in their first unplugged project.

In addition, some new pieces were written for this MTV Unplugged : The acoustic rockers Dancing with the Moonlight , Rock 'n' Roll Band , the instrumental piece Delicate Dance written by Matthias Jabs, the one written by Rudolf Schenker and also performed by the entire band sung Love Is The Answer as well as the track Follow Your Heart presented solo by Klaus Meine . However, in contrast to Acoustica , the Scorpions did without cover versions of well-known songs and instead concentrated exclusively on their own song material.
