Moment of Glory is an album by the German hard rock band Scorpions in collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker , one of the largest classical orchestras in Germany. It was released in 2000 and is the 18th regular album in the band's discography. A concert DVD was also released for the album, but it has a different selection of titles.

background

The Moment of Glory project was initiated in 1995 by the Philharmonic who wanted to work with an internationally experienced rock band in search of new challenges. The title track "Moment of Glory" is also the official anthem of the EXPO 2000 world exhibition , which took place in Hanover , the hometown of the Scorpions. The lyrics of the song is in schlager typical formulations of change, evolution and a kind of childlike charm that emanates from new and simultaneously inspires people and freed.

The joint production by rock band and classical orchestra had the character of a project for this world exhibition. On June 22, 2000, a two-hour concert by the Scorpions, together with the Berlin Philharmonic and several guest musicians, took place in the Preussag-Arena (today TUI-Arena ) on the EXPO site, which was broadcast on ZDF and as a major advertising event for the EXPO, which opened three weeks earlier and which lasted until October 31, 2000, was supposed to function. The then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and numerous other celebrities were present as spectators. The television show was moderated by Desiree Nosbusch.

The dress rehearsal on June 21, 2000 had previously been declared a public event a few days earlier (albeit at a similarly high price as the sold-out performance itself) and, with around 10,000 spectators, almost sold out. After the dress rehearsal, the audience was asked to stay in the hall as a backdrop for the recording of the official live video clip of two songs from the joint project. The video clips actually published for the single releases from the album come from this dress rehearsal.

Title selection

The majority of the songs on the album and DVD are Scorpions classics, and some are combinations of several older Scorpions classics such as the Deadly Sting Suite . Some songs have been expanded to include orchestral passages, some of them considerably.

As already mentioned, the CD and the DVD sometimes contain different titles. The songs that were mainly decoupled and promoted, such as the spectacular version of Rock You Like a Hurricane or the newly composed pieces Moment of Glory and Here in My Heart for this project, are equally represented on CD and DVD. The newly composed song We Don't Own the World, however, was only played at the concert and has therefore not been released on any official sound carrier, but is included on some versions of the download compilation "Taken B-Side" (2009). Other songs, such as the "Deadly Sting Suite", were interpreted or presented differently. The song on the CD is completely instrumental, while the concert version is mostly sung.

Criticism, sales and awards

Around two million pieces of the album have been sold worldwide so far and so the album achieved gold status in Germany.
