The ZAG-Arena is a multi-purpose hall in the capital of Lower Saxony, Hanover . It is designed for concerts , sporting events and large television productions. The operator is Arena Hannover GmbH . The hall is located on the former site of the World Expo 2000 at the Expo Plaza in Hanover. The exponale begins in the immediate vicinity of the arena and leads from the arena via the Messeschnellweg to the Hanover exhibition center .

history

The arena was built on the occasion of the world exhibition, completed in April 2000 shortly before the opening of the Expo 2000 after a construction period of 21 months and was named Expo-Arena during the world exhibition . The construction costs amounted to around 70 million euros .

After the world exhibition ended, the arena was called Preussag Arena until the end of 2004 . The TUI AG (formerly Preussag ) extended the sponsorship agreement for the name and Preussag Arena was from 2005 to TUI Arena. The agreement expired at the end of 2013 and was not renewed. The name of the arena was retained, however, in order to save costs for the conversion. After TUI AG stopped paying for the name in 2014, the owner Günter Papenburg was looking for a new name sponsor. On February 3rd, 2020 it was announced that the hall will be named ZAG-Arena from April 1st of that year . The new name sponsor is the Hanover-based ZAG temporary employment company . The agreement runs until 2030 with annual payments of around 250,000 euros. In addition, modernization measures are planned in the arena in the next few years, especially in the technical area.

The building is 128 meters long, 115 meters wide and 34 meters high. This is 25 meters above the EXPO Plaza level. The gross floor area including the underground car park is 50,000 . The enclosed space , including the underground car park, is 425,000 m 3 . The standardized ice hockey rink offers a playing area of ​​60 m × 30 m (approx. 1,754 m²). By sliding in the mobile grandstands, the area can be enlarged to 76 m × 38 m (approx. 2,500 m²). The maximum event area inside the hall holds around 3,000 m². In addition, there is a public area of ​​20,400 m² in the foyers on four levels. The hall offers 10,767 spectators for ice hockey games. Depending on the type of event, the space available increases to a maximum of 14,000 visitors. In addition, there are 36 club boxes, six party boxes, 450 business seats and 24 handicapped-accessible places.

The first event was the world championship boxing match at heavyweight between Michalczewski and Rocchigiani on April 15, 2000. During the Expo, played hard rock - / heavy metal - band Scorpions with the Berlin Philharmonic on 22 June 2000 in the arena. In 2001 the arena was the venue for the 2001 Men's Ice Hockey World Championship . Among other things, the final was played there. In addition, the hall was the venue for the Deutschland Cup from 2000 to 2007 . From 2001 to 2013 the hall was the venue for the Hanover Scorpions from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).

Since 2001, the radio station NDR 2 has been holding the NDR 2 Plaza Festival at the Expo Plaza in front of the arena every year at the end of May . Shortly afterwards, the N-Joy star show of the youth program N-Joy takes place. In 2008 the 4th Bundesvision Song Contest was held in the TUI Arena. The TV show Wetten, dass ..? was a guest at the TUI Arena three times, in 2000, 2005 and 2010. Europe's largest youth event, the music show The Dome , took place in the TUI Arena in 2007, 2009 and 2010. In 2013 the hall became the venue for the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö . The same was the case in 2015 for the competition taking place in Vienna .

The handball club TSV Hannover-Burgdorf has been playing a game in the arena over the Christmas period since 2011 . The club competed for the first time in February 2003 in the fifth round of the DHB Cup against TUSEM Essen in the Hanover Arena and lost in front of 8,443 spectators to the eventual finalist with 20:25. In the 2016/17 HBL season , five games were played in the TUI Arena. Since the handball Bundesliga 2017/18 , the warriors have played up to 13 games per season in the multi-purpose hall.

Previously was an attempt to establish handball in the arena, failed: The GWD Minden was in the IPL season 2004/05 under the name GWD Minden / Hanover eight games in the arena of, but the spectator interest was low. After a dispute with arena owner Günter Papenburg, the contract was terminated and the GWD returned to Minden after the 2004/05 season.
