The Phoenix Contact Arena is a multifunctional hall on the Innovation Campus Lemgo in ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is also the home of the German handball league club TBV Lemgo .

history

The Phoenix Contact Arena was built in 1977 as a school sports hall with only 200 seats under the name "Lüttfeldhalle" for the vocational schools in the Lippe district . In the first twenty years of its existence, several conversions and expansions took place in the direct vicinity of the Technical University of Ostwestfalen-Lippe . In 1983 the number of seats was 950, of which 870 were seats. However, the space requirement increased further and it was decided to expand by 600 places. Another grandstand with 520 seats was inaugurated in 1985. This brought the total capacity to 2000 visitors. At that time there was no financial means for a complete renovation of the hall.

In the 1996/97 season, when the TBV Lemgo his first championship in handball won, it became apparent that the spectator capacity was no longer sufficient, now with 1,750 seats and 250 standing places. After the expansion in 1997, with a capacity of 3300 seats and additional standing room, the hall was renamed “Lipperlandhalle” and is now a sports, culture and congress center.

The Lippe district and the TBV Lemgo founded the operating company Lipperlandhalle mbH to coordinate the major events that are now increasingly taking place alongside professional sports, such as concerts, congresses, trade fairs and markets . The full-time managing director is Michael Arend. Various part-time managing directors have stood by his side over the years: Hans-Werner Antkewitz, Fynn Holpert, Frank Schäfer and currently Rainer Grabe.

Since the last expansion in 2004 and 2005, the hall now offers space for 5,000 visitors, with 10-15% standing. For the inauguration in October 2005, in addition to an open house, guided tours and an opening show were staged. Well-known musicians such as Annett Louisan , Banaroo , Lou Bega and Limahl performed at this.

The renovation and new building was documented in a media project by the Technical University of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Department of Media Production. A 170-minute film one year Lipperlandhalle was made about the construction, the most important sporting events in the hall during construction, interviews with the athletes and about cultural events. Students developed the new website together with the operators and the Lippe district.

The Lipperlandhalle in Lemgo was one of the venues for the 2007 men's handball world championship .

Since July 1, 2018, the electrical engineering company Phoenix Contact has been the name sponsor of the Lipperlandhalle, which is now called Phoenix Contact Arena , for five years .

The company that represents the hall is still called "Operating Company Lipperlandhalle mbH (BGL)"
