The Rothenbach Hall in the Hessian city of Kassel is a multifunctional hall of the Kassel Exhibition Center . Since December 26, 2007, the national handball league team MT Melsungen has played its home games in the hall.

Building history

Construction of the hall began on March 21, 2007, and the topping-out ceremony was held on June 1, 2007 . The Rothenbach Hall was inaugurated on October 7, 2007 with a gala evening for a group of companies. At Christmas 2007 the hall for handball games was completed (stands, sanitary facilities, etc.).

Technical specifications

The hall consists of 150 precast concrete parts with a total mass of 810 tons. The maximum span is 18 m. 500 m 3 of glued wood were used for the ceiling construction designed as a gable roof . 60 m is the span of the laminated beams. The clearance height is 10 m.

The usable event area is 80 m × 60 m (= 4,800 m 2 ), the area of the foyer and side rooms is 900 m 2 . The total area of 5,700 m 2 corresponds roughly to that of a soccer field . The hall holds 5,000 without seats and 4,000 with seats. The capacity for handball games is 4,300 people. The hall can be completely darkened.

The operator invested 4.8 million euros in the construction of the hall without any public subsidies.

Use as a handball hall and at the EM 2008

Initially, the use of the Rothenbach Hall by MT Melsungen was only intended as a one-off event for which considerable renovation work was necessary. However, when the 4,300 tickets for the game against THW Kiel were sold out within 55 minutes, the club's management decided to play all further home games in the new hall.

During the European men's handball championship in 2008 , the Rothenbach Hall was used as a venue for public viewing .

Further use

Since the basketball players of the BG Göttingen did not have a freely available hall suitable for the Bundesliga on some occasions, some games in the basketball Bundesliga were played in the Rothenbach hall.
