The Swiss Life Hall (previously the stadium sports hall and AWD Hall ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Calenberger Neustadt district of the Lower Saxony state capital, Hanover . The venue is located in the Sportpark Hannover .

history

The sports hall was opened in 1964 in what was then the Volkssportpark on Ferdinand-Wilhelm-Fricke-Weg as a stadium sports hall and offered space for 6,000 guests. It was designed by the architects Werner Dierschke and Volker Leonhardt. Until the end of 2012 it was called AWD Hall . The current name is based on a sponsorship agreement with the life insurance group Swiss Life . The reason for the name change is the expiry of the AWD brand after the takeover of AWD Holding by Swiss Life.

In 2004, the operating company music & sports hall GmbH & Co. KG , a subsidiary of Hannover Concerts , took over the stadium sports hall . This was followed by extensive renovation to improve visitor comfort and the technical installations.

use

The Swiss Life Hall can accommodate up to 4,540 people for sporting events and up to 5800 spectators for concerts and thus serves as a venue for smaller events in addition to the larger TUI Arena . It is still the venue for the handball players of TSV Hannover-Burgdorf in the handball Bundesliga . From 1966 to 1983 it was the home venue of the former Bundesliga handball team PSV Hannover . Furthermore, the hall served from 2009 to 2011 as the home venue of the former basketball pro A league club UBC Hannover .

In addition to the sport, concerts , stand-up comedy performances and other events take place. Around 100 events are held in the Swiss Life Hall every year.
