Oscar François George Berger-Levrault (born May 9, 1826 in Strasbourg , † September 24, 1903 in Nancy ) was a French philatelist who, along with the Englishman John Edward Gray , is credited with inventing the stamp catalog .

Life

Oscar Berger-Levrault was a bookseller in his native Strasbourg. In addition to this activity, he found time to deal with philately . He was one of the first stamp collectors to deal with the scientifically and systematically pursued creation of stamp collections. As part of his work as a philatelist, on September 17, 1861, he published a stamp and postal stationery directory "Description of the Stamps Known Up to Now", which can definitely be described as the world's first stamp catalog, although it is more a list than a list Catalog deals because illustrations are completely missing. However, it recorded all 973 postage stamps in the world that had appeared up to then that were known to the bookseller.

Since Berger-Levrault was the first to draw up such a list, mistakes had crept in. It was used by Alfred Potiquet as a template for the first illustrated stamp catalog published in December 1861.

Although Berger-Levrault's philatelic work was only intended for his friends and had an edition of 40 to 50 copies, one copy ended up in the hands of the British Museum in London , where it is now.
