The Sapporo International Ski Marathon ( Japanese 札幌 国際 ス キ ー マ ラ ソ ン , Sapporo Kokusai Sukī Marason ) is a winter event in the Japanese winter sports resort of Sapporo . It made its debut in 1981 and ran parts of the ski marathon route of the Winter Olympics in Sapporo in 1972 . This run is the oldest ski marathon event in Japan and has been part of the Worldloppet series since 1985. In addition to competitive athletes, well-trained amateur runners of all ages can also take part. The marathon takes place annually on the second weekend in February.

history

The first ski marathon in Sapporo took place on March 8, 1981. The main route length was 30 km, 20 km and 10 km were also completed.

The idea for the race came from a delegation of sports organizers from the Ski Association of Japan from Europe; they had orientated themselves on the Holmenkollen Games and visited Norway and Germany to gain experience in organizing mass winter sports events. With the involvement of winter sports organizations from Sapporo and Hokkaidō , the idea of continuing to use the sports facilities prepared for the 1972 Winter Olympics was developed, and a cross-country skiing competition on the previous trail was decided. The Sapporo International Ski Marathon Organizing Committee, which Soroku Ozawa has chaired as President since 2017, was founded to ensure smooth preparation and comprehensive organization .

At the start of the Sapporo Ski Marathon, all Worldloppet winners of the 1980/1981 season were invited to Japan. 114 skiers took part in the first competition. In the following year 1982 the FIS supported the event, which established a cross-country skiing competition in Asia for the first time . - The long distance of the race was changed to the full marathon length of 42 km, from 1985 the longest distance was 50 km. Later the organizers changed the 20 km to 25 km and the 10 km to 5 km. The free running technique then gradually replaced the previous parallel ski guidance, also known as the classic running technique .

Loops with various ascents and descents are prepared as a route, the start and finish have been in the Sapporo Dome since 2002 . The running area is located in Nakajima Park Chuo-ku Sapporo Hokkaidō (the Sapporo Nakajima Athletic Center). Although there is no extreme ascent ( feature hill ) to be mastered, the organizers and participants rate the route as difficult due to its constantly changing undulating course. The maximum difference in altitude is 187 m. At the Shirahatayama Open Stadium at km 31.5 there is the only official checkpoint that participants have to pass by 4:30 hours. If this limit is exceeded, the runners have to retire here and are driven back to the dome by bus.

This cross-country skiing is one of the 20 runs that the International Ski Federation (FIS) included in the Worldloppets in 1985 .

Growing interest from professional winter athletes and popular athletes from all over the world meant that in February 2017, for example, 1904 runners took part in the competitions of the 37th Ski Marathon.

However, most of the participants were registered for the 50 km run in 1987: 2048.

In order to enable children, young people and the elderly to take part, competitions are also held on 11 km, 5 km and 3 km in the time frame of the Sapporo Skimarathon.
