Vasaloppet China

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vasaloppet China (VLC) is a cross-country skiing in the Chinese province of Jilin near the city of Changchun on the route of the Changchun Yingyuetan Forest Marathon . It has been held annually since 2003 and was included in the Worldloppet competition series by the Worldloppet Ski Federation in 2014. In addition to competitive athletes, well-trained amateur runners of all ages can also take part. The Asian Wasalauf - in the English spelling with "V" - takes place annually in the first quarter as part of a large folk festival .

history

In the 21st century, the Chinese Orienteering Ski Association was looking for ways to establish interesting, ecologically harmless winter sports events for as many participants as possible in the country. Area Changchun City with the Changchun Jingyuetan National Key Scenic Spot has a similar landscape character as the vastness of Sweden, where since 1922 regularly the historic Vasaloppet takes place. In order to check whether an Asian Wasa run can be held in China in precisely this province, representatives of the Chinese Ski Association made contact with the Swedish Wasa Organizing Committee and with the city government of Changchun in 2002 . They agreed on details including the re-use of the established name of the event.

Skiing had already spread as a popular sport in China in the mountain regions and in the countryside from the middle of the 20th century and was met with great interest. For the new popular sports event, the start and finish points were determined on a circular route that has to be run through several times, and the route measured; for the main run it is - contrary to the historical model - 50 km. The participants do it in the classic run (parallel ski guidance). In addition, a good infrastructure with transport and overnight accommodation for athletes and their companions as well as tourists was created almost “out of nowhere” in a very short time.

The specially founded organizing committee was able to put the participants of the first Vasaloppet China on track back in the spring of 2003 . In addition to the main run, the organizers organize a 25 km run and - especially for beginners, children and less experienced - shorter routes: 200 m ("Children's Vasa"), 2 km ("Fun Ski") and a separate student competition between 17 Universities. Complete running equipment can be hired on site.

The Vasaloppet International Skiing Festival takes place around the eponymous run and covers a period of three months. On January 2nd each year the festival opens with a festive ceremony. In addition to the Vasaloppet, there are various sports opportunities for visitors, as well as cultural events, exhibitions and trade fairs, as well as a snow sculpture competition. The organizers describe the festival as a “contribution to international understanding” in the broadest sense.

Since 2006 there has also been the Vasa Night Banquet ceremony .

For 2007, the media reported the participation of 15 nations in the main run.

In spring 2011, the Vasaloppet Museum opened in Jingyue Park immediately after the main Vasa run was over. In this newly built two-storey museum, visitors can learn more about the history of the (Swedish) Vasa Run on the one hand and the history of the Vasa Run China on the other.

The VLC has been part of the Worldloppet series since June 2014 . In the 2016/2017 winter season, the VLC was also part of the Ski Classics .
