Walentyna Shevchenko ( Ukrainian Валентина Шевченко ; born October 2, 1975 in Hanniwka , Chernihiv Oblast , Ukrainian SSR , USSR ) is a Ukrainian cross-country skier and five-time Olympic athlete (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014).

Career

Walentyna Shevchenko is a police officer and starts for Dynamo Kiev . She is married with one child and lives in Brovary . She has been active since 1989. She contested her first big races at the Junior World Championships in 1994 in Breitenwang , where the best placement, 19th place over 5 km, gave no indication of her later career. In January 1995 she was able to celebrate her debut in the cross-country skiing world cup in Nové Město and was 60th in the 15-kilometer race. Then she started at the Universiade in Candanchú and in Thunder Bay for the first time in a Nordic World Ski Championships . She has not yet achieved any notable results at either of the major events. In March 1996 she won world cup points for the first time over 15 km in Falun . It was not until December 1997 that she was eighth for the first time in the top ten in Davos over 15 km.

1998 Winter Olympics

1998 brought the first start at the Olympic Games . In Nagano she started in four races, the best result she achieved in eleventh place on her parade route, the 15-kilometer race. At the Winter Universiade 1999 in Štrbské Pleso she won the bronze medal with the relay and the gold medal over 5 km classic, in the subsequent pursuit and over 15 km freestyle.

Shevchenko achieved her first very good result at a Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau, where she was sixth over 5 km. In the following period, the Ukrainian managed to stabilize and improve. She established herself among the best in the world and often achieved good results in the World Cup.

2002 Winter Olympics

In the 2002 Olympic Games of Salt Lake City she performed again in four races. She achieved her best placement as fifth on the longest distance over 30 km. In Tarvisio in 2003 she competed again at a Universiade, this time she won the race over 15 kilometers. The 2003 Nordic World Ski Championships were very successful, albeit without winning a medal . In three of four starts, she finished in the top ten (15 km: sixth; 30 km: seventh; pursuit: ninth).

In November 2003, at the beginning of the following season, Shevchenko was able to win her first World Cup race in Kuusamo in a race over ten kilometers, shortly afterwards she won a race over the same distance in Davos. Between November 2003 and March 2004 she ran in 16 World Cup races in a row to single-digit placements. In the overall World Cup ranking of the 2003/04 season, she finished third.

2006 Winter Olympics

The next major event with good finishes the Ukrainians were the 2006 Olympic Winter Games of Turin . At the Olympic races of Pragelato Plan , she competed in four races, as in her previous two games. Twice, as eighth with the relay and seventh over 30 km, she finished in the top ten. Shevchenko had another very good season in 2006/07 . She took two places on the podium and was seventh in the overall World Cup ranking. In the Tour de Ski 2006/2007 , which was held for the first time , the policewoman came third. The top result at the highlight of the season, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007, was eighth place in the 10-kilometer race in Sapporo .

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Shevchenko reached fourth place over 10 km freestyle in Beitostølen . She finished the 2007/08 Tour de Ski in fourth place overall. She won the final stage. This was followed by further top ten placements, including two victories in distance races in Canmore and Oslo . These are her last podium finishes in the World Cup so far. She finished the season in sixth place in the overall World Cup ranking and second in the distance ranking. In the following season she could not repeat the strong performances from the previous season. At the Tour de Ski 2008/09 , after another strong final stage, she achieved third place, 14th place in the overall tour ranking. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , she won bronze in the 30 km mass start race. The Tour de Ski 2009/10 she finished in 19th place. Her best placement of the season she achieved in Canmore in the last race before the Olympic Games with fourth place over 10 km freestyle.

2010 Winter Olympics

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she came in 14th place in the 15 km pursuit, 13th place with the relay and ninth place over 10 km freestyle. She finished the Tour de Ski 2010/11 with 16th place overall. Her best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo were 14th place in the 30 km mass start race and 12th place with the relay. Her best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme were 12th place in the 30 km mass start race and 10th place with the relay. She finished the Tour de Ski 2012/13 and Tour de Ski 2013/14 in 16th and 14th place overall.

2014 Winter Olympics

Her best results at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were 14th place in the 30 km mass start race and 12th place in the relay. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 2015 , she finished 33rd in the 30 km mass start race, 28th in the skiathlon and 11th in the relay. After finishing second at the Slavic Cup in Štrbské Pleso over 7.5 km freestyle at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, she won the Eastern Europe Cup in Syanti over 10 km freestyle. In addition, she achieved second place there over 5 km in classic and sprint. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2017 , she achieved 44th place over 10 km classic and 42nd place in skiathlon. She finished the season in 11th place in the overall ranking of the Eastern Europe Cup.

So far (as of the end of the 2016/17 season), Shevchenko has won around 275 World Cup races five times and made it onto the podium 13 times. It was placed in the top ten more than 50 times. She competed 19 times in Olympic races. She also competed in long distance races in the Worldloppet series. She won La Sgambeda in 2009 and 2010 . In the 2011/12 season she won the Dolomitenlauf , Transjurassienne and Finlandia-hiihto . In January 2013 she won the Jizera Mountains Run and in August 2014 the Kangaroo Hoppet . In the 2015/16 season she won the classic 42 km Dolomitenlauf . Shevchenko is a member of the Skinfit Racing Team .
