Ernest Payne

Ernest Payne (born December 23, 1884 in Worcester ; † September 10, 1961 there ) was a British cyclist and Olympic champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Ernest "Ernie" Payne won the gold medal in the team pursuit at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London with Benjamin Jones , Clarence Kingsbury and Leon Meredith in front of the German team. He was also at the start in the sprint and over 5000 meters, but could not place. Payne started for the Worcester St. Johns Cycling Club , where he also began cycling in 1903. He has won more than 150 races including regional, national and British races, races of the Empire and, finally, the Olympics. In 1905 he was two-time British champion on the track . He has won the Muratti Gold Cup several times , one of the oldest and most traditional British track races over 10 miles. In 1910 he ended his career as a cyclist. After his cycling career he became a soccer player .

He worked as a carpenter in his hometown.
