Gert Frank (born March 15, 1956 in Hobro ; † January 19, 2019 ) was a Danish cyclist .
Athletic career
Gert Frank was one of the best track cyclists in Denmark in the 1970s and 1980s. Even in the youth and junior class he was three times Danish champion, in tandem races , in individual and team time trials as well as Nordic champion.
In 1976 Frank became the Danish amateur team pursuit champion with Niels Fredborg , Gunnar Asmussen and Kurt Frisch . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he won the bronze medal in the team time trial on the road together with Verner Blaudzun , Jørn Lund and Jørgen Emil Hansen .
After the Olympic Games, Gert Frank switched to the professionals . In 1977 and 1979 he was Danish champion in the single pursuit , in 1980 in the Omnium . He also won the title of European champion in two-man team driving four times .
In addition, Frank competed almost exclusively in six-day races in the following years . He started in a total of 143 six-day races, of which he won 20. He came second 22 times and third 20 times; This puts him in 27th place in the all-time ranking of six-day drivers. At the beginning of the 1980s it was expected that Frank would succeed Patrick Sercu and René Pijnen as “bosses” of the six-day riders, but his performance deteriorated noticeably after a few years. In 1988 Frank retired from active cycling.
After the sport
Then Gert Frank opened a bicycle shop on Gammel Kongevej , the main shopping street in Copenhagen , and he also worked as a purchasing manager for a computer company. He died in his sleep of a blood clot in his heart at the age of 62 .
