Athletic career

Ernst Ihbe was a trained chemist . He started for the RC Wettiner in Leipzig. After some good successes, he was appointed to the German National Team Bahn founded by Willi Frenzel in 1933, although he was unable to contest some selection races due to illness. From 1934 he formed a tandem with Carl Lorenz . At the Open British Championships in 1934 Lorenz drove in the first lap, but both lost. In the repechage Ihbe moved forward, and since the two not only won the repechage but also the British championship, Ihbe stayed in front until the end of their career together. The two athletes won two German championship titles together, Ihbe was also a German champion over 25 kilometers. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , Ihbe and Lorenz won the gold medal together. In 1933 he won his first title as German champion, winning the 25 kilometer race. In September he was appointed to his first international start (Copenhagen). After winning the national tandem title with Lorenz in 1934, he also won in 1935 (this time with Karsch). The race was held over the unusual distance of 5000 meters with points scoring.

His conscription to the military interrupted his career from 1939 to 1945. After his return from captivity , Ihbe tried his hand at becoming a professional in 1945 without much success.
